No Young Women Left Behind - Young Women’s Trust

No Young Women Left Behind - Young Women’s Trust

Katie.Dix / 24 Mar 2021

New #NoYoungWomenLeftBehind campaign action: launched 12 midday today 5th March 2021

The Budget was a missed opportunity to make sure young women get the vital support they need.

Extending the £20 a week uplift in Universal Credit for just 6 months doesn't give young women security. It also fails to recognise the challenges facing those on other benefits, especially young women receiving Carer's Allowance.

Young women are calling on the government to increase both Universal Credit and Carer's Allowance not just for 6 months, but permanently.

Will you support them and sign the petition now?

Why we need this petition:

Growing numbers of young women are having to rely on benefits as job losses rise. When the crisis hit, the Government recognised the increasing financial pressures and made a temporary increase of £20 to the basic rate of Universal Credit. Young Women tell us this has been a vital lifeline at a time when many have seen incomes fall and costs rise.  Lockdown may be set to ease soon, but young women are likely to experience a long-term impact on their finances.

In particular, Young Women’s Trust’s ‘Picking up the Pieces’ research showed that:

  • 1.5 million (28%) young women have lost income since the start of the pandemic.
  • One in eight women had applied for benefits since the first lockdown.
  • One in four mothers had applied for benefits.
  • Of those applying for benefits, it was the first time applying for benefits for 69% of young women.
  • One in six young women had reduced their hours at work to manage childcare.

Throughout the pandemic, we’ve been working with young women on the #NoYoungWomanLeftBehind campaign. We want to make sure that no young woman is left behind as the government plans for the nation’s recovery. This petition is the latest action for the campaign, which you can find out about here.
