Alexandra Miles - Taking control

Alexandra Miles - Taking control

katie.robertson / 31 Jan 2024

2.5cm too short, that’s all they were, my arms.

But it meant I couldn’t reach the controls, couldn’t pass the test to be eligible to fly planes for the RAF.

Fast forward to now, and a career working in pensions and investments,

My short(ish) arms don’t seem to be so much of an issue. Phew.

And so the theme of my session last night, taking control. And wow, what an event. Thank you so much to St. James’s Place for hosting us all, and E2Wand Katie Robertson and Mark Freed in particular for organising it all.

Each time I do these events I learn so much about myself, and from those around me. The experience is both humbling and empowering at the same time. I was buzzing as I cycled home after it, with lots of ideas for what we could do next time. Thank you to all that came along, after work, to learn and have some fun, building a network across the city.

I spoke about the pensions gap, how it arises, and what you as an individual can do about it. Planning early being key. The slides I used are shown below, lots of facts and figures for you all.

The message of planning was central to all four sessions – Amelie Chowna talking financial planning, my session and Rebecca Maxwell-Hyslop and Debbie Mahanta talking us through how to maximise your tax efficiencies, whatever stage you’re at.
