Fasting from negativity

I’m a big fan of Pancake Day, but this year my mind has been thinking beyond that yummy stack of pancakes to the abstinence that some of us will partake in afterwards.

Traditionally the focus has been on giving up our favourite but perhaps less healthy foods. But what about if we gave up negativity and more precisely negativity towards ourselves?

As a recovering perfectionist (still a work in progress but getting better day by day!!), I have spent a great deal of my time thinking negatively about myself, my achievements, my ability, my value. It’s been an ingrained way of thinking about myself but not an accurate reflection of who I am. So over the years I have been working and helping many others work on turning down that negative voice, the one the undermines us and makes us feel and play small, and turning up the positive, affirming voice.

So for those of you that fancy experimenting with the impact of fasting from negativity, here’s some steps to help:

  1. Self-Awareness - You can’t change what you aren’t aware of. Write two lists, one of the positive and one of the negative things that you think about yourself
  2. Balance – If your positive list is shorter than the negative, add some more things to it, for now it doesn’t matter if you don’t believe it (If they are already balanced or you have more on the positive list – well done you!!)
  3. Believe – Look at those things on the positive list that you doubt and find reasons that they are true. What would your best friend tell you?
  4. Embody – Practice saying the positive things to yourself. The more you practice the more it becomes you (if the doubt creeps in, remember you are fasting from negativity so you’re not interested in listening to that voice!)

Good luck and I’d love to hear about your successes!
