What do Women Returners Want?

What do Women Returners Want?

Mark.Freed / 01 Dec 2016

In the search for talent,  firms are increasingly looking for new talent pools and innovative ways to connect and communicate. Women (and men) looking to return to Financial Services Careers is an example of a new talent pool. Financial institutions have developed ‘returner programmes’ to engage and attract people back into the work force. Broadly Speaking there are two types of ‘returner programmes’’:

•    those that offer a soft landing potentially back into work via an internship and
•    those that offer an immediate real opportunity to get straight back via supportive hiring.

Soft Landing - Internships:
Many firms have developed soft landing returnships and they are the ones that have tended to get all the press.

These offers talented professionals who have taken an extended career break a transition back into the workplace. Programmes are designed to help professionals ramp up skills, update industry knowledge and boost confidence.
Returners are paid and the programme runs for approximately 12 weeks. Returners have the opportunity to work on projects that match their skills and expertise, and tap into a support network of like-minded professionals.  Participation in the program does not guarantee employment post completion.

Immediate Real Opportunities:
Other firms offer a different approach called supportive hiring.  Returners are able to apply for real vacancies that are deemed suitable for returners.  If successful the returner would receive internal mentoring and focused training to support their transition back to the corporate workplace.

Quite a contrast.

At E2W we are working with clients on Women Returner Programmes and would like to hear your views and experiences on the merits and pitfalls of the alternatives. You can mail us your views at mark.freed@e2w.co
