For this week’s E2 Inspired series we welcome our special guest, Shalaka Laxman.

Shalaka is an entrepreneur, artist, writer, and sustainable finance professional experimenting with a portfolio career after eight years in the corporate world. Previously, she worked at Deutsche Bank developing sustainable financial products for large corporates, and prior to that she spent five years at J.P. Morgan in a variety of roles in New York and London. Shalaka is currently freelancing for the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, consulting for an AI start-up, writing a weekly sustainability newsletter, and running an art & home decor small business.

About the session:

A portfolio career is a working style where you combine multiple streams of income—often creating a mix of full or part-time employment, freelancing or working as a consultant. More and more workers today are prioritizing freedom and flexibility over a seemingly secure corporate job. This phenomenon is backed by a recent study revealing that 24 million U.S. workers want to leave traditional employment to become their own boss by 2021. In this session, Shalaka will explain what a portfolio career can look like for finance professionals, and explain how she started planning her switch from a single full-time job to a mix of multiple mini-careers. This event will give you insights into the pros and cons of a portfolio career, an understanding of the benefits associated with a varied career, and a list of next steps and recommendations to get started.
